Buddha's delight (Simplified Chinese: 罗汉斋 or 斋; Traditional Chinese: 羅漢齋 or 齋; Pinyin: luóhàn zhāi; Cantonese Jyutping: lo4 hon3 zaai1; Peh-ōe-jī: lô-hàn-tsai; lit. "vegetarian food of the Buddhist", and sometimes called luóhàn cài Simplified Chinese: 罗汉菜; Traditional Chinese: 羅漢菜) is a vegetarian dish of Chinese and Buddhist cuisine, originally consumed by Buddhist monks.
Accompanied by rice, it is composed of at least ten vegetables and seeds which vary according to regions. In South China, it is eaten on the first day of Chinese New Year as a form of purification and asceticism, certain ingredients like fat choy or arrowhead not being available except at this time of year. The foods that compose it can have a symbolic meaning, for example, ginkgo nuts would bring good fortune.
In addition to meat, eggs and milk, garlic is banned from this recipe as it is traditionally banned from Buddhist cuisine.
