Jakarta, Indonesia
0
Nasi kebuli is an Indonesian dish of spiced boiled rice, cooked in a broth of goat, milk and ghee, popular within the Arab community in Indonesia and among the Betawi people of Jakarta. Nasi kebuli is influenced by Arab culture and originates in Middle Eastern cuisine, especially from Yemen (mandi rice), but also from Indian cuisine (biryani). According to etymological study, nasi kebuli refers to kabuli palaw, an Afghan rice dish from Kabul, similar to biryani served in South Asia.
In Betawi culture, nasi kebuli is usually served during Muslim celebrations, such as hari raya lebaran, kurban or maulid nabi (birthday of Muhammad). Nasi kebuli is also popular in cities where there are many descendants of Arabs, such as in Jakarta, Surabaya, Surakarta and Gresik.
