Babi kecap is an Indonesian braised pork dish with sweet soy sauce (kecap manis). It is a classic of Sino-Indonesian cuisine, due to its simplicity and popularity in the households of Indonesian Chinese. It is also popular among non-Muslim Indonesians, such as Balinese, Ambonese, Bataks, Minahasans and Dayaks, and in the Netherlands among Indo-Dutch where it is known as babi ketjap, due to colonial ties with Indonesia. In the Netherlands, this dish can also be served at a sumptuous Rijsttafel meal. It is thought that this dish has its origins in braised pork from southern China with soy sauce, known in Indonesia as babi taotjo without the tauco, because it was not available in the past. The dish is however more typically Indonesian due to the slight sweetness provided by Indonesian kecap manis, a sweet soy sauce. It is sometimes prepared with a sweet chili sauce. In Bali, babi kecap is consumed during festivals such as Galungan and Nyepi. --- Entry compiled automatically from [Wikidata](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q28163754) and Wikipedia.
