Jian dui (煎堆) is a type of fried Chinese pastry, made of glutinous rice flour covered with sesame seeds. The exterior is crispy, the interior firm and slightly sticky. The swelling of the dough during cooking creates a hollow volume generally occupied by a filling based on lotus paste (蓮蓉), black bean paste (hei dousha, 黑豆沙), red bean paste (hong dousha, 紅豆沙) or black sesame paste. Depending on the region and cultural area, jian dui are also known as matuan (麻糰) in Northern China, ma yuan (麻圆) in Northeastern China, and zhen dai (珍袋) in Hainan. In North American Chinese restaurants and bakeries, they are called sesame seed balls. They are also sometimes referred to by the name zhimaqiu (芝麻球, literally 'sesame ball'). --- Entry automatically compiled from [Wikidata](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2023763) and Wikipedia.
