lontong — West Kalimantan, Indonesia
West Kalimantan, Indonesia
0
Lontong is a compressed rice cake in cylinder form and wrapped in banana leaves, commonly found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Rice wrapped in banana leaves, then boiled and cut into pieces is a replacement accompaniment for classical cooked rice. In Malaysia, it is called nasi himpit ('compressed rice' in Malay). The smallest size of lontong, filled with vegetables (carrot, bean, and potato) and sometimes with meat, is eaten as a snack. The texture is similar to ketupat, except that the latter are made with janur (young coconut leaves), while lontong uses banana leaves.
The dish is served cold or at room temperature with sauce-based dishes such as gado-gado, karedok, ketoprak, or sate. It can accompany coconut milk soups, such as soto, gulai, and other curries, and serves as an alternative to vermicelli.
