Mtewem or tajine mtewem (مثوم, in Arabic) is an Algerian dish, more precisely from Algiers, made from minced meat patties, pieces of chicken or lamb meat and almonds. Its sauce is prepared with grated onion and lots of garlic, as its name suggests ('mtewem' means 'with garlic'). It is a traditional dish that is very consumed during the month of Ramadan and is often prepared when receiving guests in Algiers. With couscous, it is also an essential dish at weddings in Algiers. Cooks sometimes replace the almonds with chickpeas. Recipes differ from one household to another and are passed down from generation to generation. It can be prepared with white or red sauce. --- Entry compiled automatically from [Wikidata](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3327301) and Wikipedia.
