Murukku (Tamil: முறுக்கு; Malayalam: മുറുക്ക്; Telugu: మురుకులు (murukulu)) is a snack from South India that resembles churros somewhat. It is a fried preparation made with a dough incorporating rice and urad bean flour (legume called urad dal in Indian English). Murukku means "twisted" in Tamil.
Murukku is also called chakali (Kannada (ಚಕ್ಲಿ) and Marathi (चकली): chakli; Gujarati (ચકરી): chakri; Telugu (చక్రాలు): chakralu; Konkani: chakri or chakkuli) or jantikalu (in Telugu: జంతికలు).
The town of Manapparai in Tamil Nadu (Tiruchirappalli district) is particularly known for its murukku. Murukku are eaten during various traditional festivals like Diwali and Gokulashtami. Murukku are also consumed during celebrations among the Iyers (Tamil Brahmin caste).
