Nasi kuning (Indonesian for 'yellow rice'), or sometimes called nasi kunyit ('turmeric rice'), is an Indonesian dish of rice cooked with coconut milk and turmeric, which gives it its yellow color. Nasi kuning is served molded into a cone shape and called tumpeng. This dish is usually consumed on special occasions. The color and shape of the rice symbolize a pile of gold; this dish, served at celebrations and ceremonies, is a symbol of fortune and health.
The dish is generally served with many accompanying dishes, such as omelet cut into slices, serundeng (coconut and spice relish), urap (vegetables seasoned with coconut milk), teri kacang (fried anchovies and peanuts), sambal goreng (fried tempeh and caramelized potatoes in a spicy sauce), ayam goreng (Javanese fried chicken), balado udang (spicy chili shrimp), or perkedel (meat patties).
One can also find beef, offal or seafood. Nasi kuning is also served with kerupuk udang (krupuk) or emping (chips) and sliced tomato and cucumber for garnish.
The top of the tumpeng is normally served to the eldest of those present.
