Bánh bao is a filled bread found in Vietnam. Inspired by baozi originating from China, it is prepared with milk and the filling generally contains hard-boiled egg and sausage. It is classified in the bánh, meaning "cake", a very varied set of Vietnamese cuisine dishes.
Bánh bao is directly inspired by baozi from northern and eastern China, as well as Mongolian buuz. Imported and adapted to Vietnam, it preserves the tradition of steamed filled bread, except that bánh bao is always sweet.
It is also consumed in southern China, in Cantonese cuisine, where it is called in Mandarin, naihuangbao and in Cantonese, naaiwoongbaau (Simplified Chinese: 奶皇包; Traditional Chinese: 奶黃包; Pinyin: nǎihuángbāo; Cantonese Jyutping: naai⁵ wong⁴ baau¹; lit. "imperial milk packet"), a Chinese sweet version filled with egg yolk cream.
